Audiologic Testing
Impedance Testing (Tympanometry)
This type of testing evaluates the middle ear system to see if there is fluid (otitis media) , abnormal middle ear pressure behind the ear drum (eustachian tube dysfunction), stiffness of the middle ear bones (otosclerosis), ear wax impaction, or even a perforated eardrum.

Treatment

Once we identify the type, severity and cause of the ear and/or hearing problem, we will then recommend treatment options. Options may include referral to your physician or to an Ear, Nose and Throat physician (otolaryngologist) for medical or surgical treatment, removal of ear wax, a hearing aid trial and fitting, and counseling/rehabilitation regarding strategies and/or tools to improve communicative success. If a hearing aid is not indicated, we will tell you . We may also suggest the use of various assistive listening devices, tinnitus treatment such as tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) or the Inhibitor: the only FDA approved treatment device for tinnitus. Or maybe we will recommend nothing at all for those with perfect test results!

Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE)
This is an evaluation of the function of the microscopic hair cells in the cochlea. OAE's are measured in infants (because they cannot yet respond voluntarily to testing) and adults to help determine the location/cause of the hearing loss. OAE's are also helpful for documenting and measuring very early onset of noise-induced hearing loss and hearing loss which can occur because of chemo-therapy medications.
Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)
ABR is helpful in ruling out tumors or lesions on the hearing nerve and brainstem. It is also another way to assess hearing status in infants and those unable to perform conventional testing. The same equipment can be utilized to help in the diagnosis of Meniere's Disease.
